When I moved to Shoreditch I had nothing but a mattress. The flat looked more squat than comfortable home furniture, but we made it ours. Forget glossy showrooms, so we searched markets. One mate found a sofa in Hackney. It felt like Shoreditch, but that’s what gave it soul. Retro armchairs have weight, accent chair funky and students get that instinctively. I’ve fallen asleep in a battered armchair with a book, and every time it felt right. Markets spill chairs onto the streets, and shops in the area thrive on it.

One afternoon I stumbled into Smithers, and the sofas looked like they belonged in films. We couldn’t afford much, but it’s the pride of the living room. Ask around and you’ll hear it. it’s what makes memories. Retro sofas don’t care if you spill. Flat-pack won’t last a term, but vintage carries weight. every creak is another laugh. Once the parties are done, the dodgy landlord fades away, but the mismatched set still makes you laugh.

If you find yourself in a Shoreditch flat, single long chair forget the catalogue shine. Make space for a classic seat, and make it part of your story.
