I’ve been in the trade man and boy for decades. Amongst the squares and crescents, a sofa is never just a sofa. I’ve seen families walk in, and they all want character. A velvet seat with history, never fails to speak up. There was a velvet sofa that went to a townhouse in Chelsea, and the scars became part of the charm. That’s the point with retro. They waste time with flat-pack, but eventually they realise. Gloss wears off, whereas old chairs carry life.

The capital’s rooms all look different. St John’s Wood desires quiet luxury, with velvet chairs. Brixton is bold, with loud armchairs. That’s what keeps us alive. I’ve learnt over years, customers never forget the chair that mattered. Flat-pack won’t do that. I still touch the arms of the chairs, and the difference is clear. Old family-friendly furniture lives. When a showroom tempts you, take a breath. Bring home something with story, and see how it shapes your home.
