Moving into a student flat ain’t glamorous. The walls were bare, but we gave it soul with furniture. New furniture is soulless, so we searched markets. Someone even nabbed a table from outside a pub. Everything mismatched, stylish armchairs but that’s what gave it soul. Funky retro seating has character, and it doesn’t matter if it’s scratched. I’ve fallen asleep in a battered armchair with a book, and the furniture was part of the night. East London is built on mix and mess, and students rely on it.

I stopped by Smithers looking for nothing, and retro sofas the accent chairs were bold and weird. We couldn’t afford much, but everyone fights to sit in it. We’ve all shoved sofas through windows. It’s part of student life. Vintage pieces survive it. Flat-pack won’t last a term, but real pieces stay alive. every dent becomes part of the flat. By the end of the year, the cracked window gets forgotten, armchairs vintage design but the mismatched set still makes you laugh. When you think furniture, don’t waste time on the soulless new.

Grab a retro sofa, and let it shout Shoreditch every time you sit.
