Life in a student flat starts rough but gets colourful. The windows rattled in the wind, but we built it piece by piece. Flat-pack breaks too quick, so we hunted retro. One mate found a sofa in Hackney. It felt like Shoreditch, but that’s what made it home. Chairs with scars feel stronger, and students get that instinctively. I’ve hosted ten people on one sagging retro sofa, and the custom furniture designs was part of the night. Markets spill chairs onto the streets, and designers take inspiration from it.

We found ourselves in Smithers showroom, and the vintage armchairs carried scars I loved. We couldn’t afford much, but it’s the pride of the living room. We’ve all begged friends for lifts. it’s where life happens. Vintage pieces survive it. Modern stuff? Forget it, but retro lasts. every creak is another laugh. When you’re moving out, the broken toaster doesn’t matter, but the armchair stays in your mind.

Next time you walk past a market, leave the glossy showrooms behind. Make space for a classic seat, and watch it age with you.
