    Cellulose gels have emerged as a cornerstone of sustainable materials science due to their abundance, biocompatibility, and structural tunability. In recent years, research has expanded from classical food and pharmaceutical uses to advanced biomedical, environmental, and smart-materials applications.

    Advances in Structure and Processing

    Recent work has shown that nanostructuring and hybridization significantly enhance the functionality of cellulose gels. Methods such as ionic liquid processing, enzymatic hydrolysis, and freeze-thaw cycles allow precise control over pore size, surface chemistry, and viscoelastic properties (Mao et al., 2023). These improvements expand the gel’s use in energy storage, biosensing, and controlled-release systems.

    Biomedical Applications

    Recent studies underscore cellulose gels as advanced wound-healing materials. Functionalization with antimicrobial agents and nanoparticles has enhanced healing efficacy (Gorgieva & Kokol, 2023). Injectable cellulose hydrogels are being engineered for drug delivery, capable of responding to stimuli such as pH and temperature, thus ensuring localized and sustained therapeutic release (Liu et al., 2022).

    Tissue engineering benefits from cellulose gels modified with proteins or polysaccharides to promote cell adhesion and proliferation (Fatima et al., 2021). Notably, bacterial cellulose gels have shown promise as bioinks for 3D bioprinting scaffolds (Chirayil et al., 2022).

    Food and Nutritional Science

    In the food industry, cellulose gels serve as low-fat stabilizers and dietary fiber fortifiers. Novel formulations exploit cellulose gels’ satiety-inducing properties, supporting obesity management strategies (Lopez-Sanchez et al., 2020). Their role as carriers for probiotics and bioactive compounds is gaining traction, ensuring viability during storage and controlled release in the gut (Chen et al., 2023).

    Environmental and Energy Applications

    Cellulose gels are advancing in water treatment through heavy metal ion adsorption and dye removal (Abdul Khalil et al., 2021). Moreover, functionalized gels incorporating conductive polymers are being tested in supercapacitors and batteries, providing a renewable alternative to petroleum-based binders (Zhu et al., 2021).

    Smart and Responsive Materials

    A striking new direction is the development of stimuli-responsive cellulose gels. Researchers have engineered gels that react to temperature, light, and magnetic fields, creating opportunities for biosensors, drug-controlled valves, and wearable electronics (Liu et al., 2024). This positions cellulose gel as a key biomaterial in the intersection of life sciences and nanotechnology.

    Industrial Prospects

    Global companies and innovators—including Ingreland—are exploring cellulose gel’s multifunctionality for food innovation and sustainable packaging. With strong alignment to the circular economy, cellulose gels are expected to become integral in reducing reliance on fossil-derived polymers.
